PD Event – Hands On Anatomy Review

21/09/2019 @ 09:00 - 17:00 BST

Program Description

The Human Anatomy Outreach program at Wilfrid Laurier University, offers individuals the opportunity to learn about the human body in a university laboratory setting. Special to Laurier is the chance to learn in the first synthetic human cadaver laboratory in Canada. These cadavers are composed of plant-based plastics and water, which avoids harsh chemicals and smells, but gives a realistic feel and look. We will be covering the skeletal, musculature, cardiovasculature, and nervous systems; starting at the pelvis and continuing inferiorly towards the feet. The day will be split into four regional sessions. Each session will start with a pre-lab talk and will be followed by independent learning time. This is where you will have an opportunity to go through the material on your own with the help of the coordinators and several volunteers. By the end of the day, you should be confident in naming boney markings, identifying major blood vessels and nerves, and identify musculature along with understanding their innervation, blood supply, and actions.

Speaker

Kristen McFall received her MSc specializing in biomechanics from the University of Waterloo. Prior to starting to teach, she was a research associate in the Neuromechanics Laboratory at Wilfrid Laurier University. Overall, her research background was focused on two areas: gait analysis, and ergonomics. Kristen’s research into gait analysis included a focus on footwear, aging, and injury prevention. She started in the human anatomy laboratory in fall 2010. As Wilfrid Laurier University health sciences / kinesiology and physical education lab coordinator; she interacts with the students both in a large group setting (up to 300 students) as well as on an individual basis. In this role, Kristen was a key partner in helping secure funding for two synthetic cadavers to be used within the laboratory. Through the procurement of these cadavers, she was able to start the human anatomy outreach program. The outreach program was started to give opportunities for students to practice their knowledge transfer skills to individuals from the community in a kinesthetic learning environment.
